It had flown over the border and the desert and the river and every checkpoint and every wall and every system designed to make people feel like they didn't belong. It had watched from telephone wires and rooftops and the branches of the jacaranda tree in the front yard as generation after generation of families built something from nothing and called it home. It had listened to the corridos and the prayers and the arguments and the laughter and the grief and the love that filled every room of every house on every block of every neighborhood that the rest of the world called the wrong side of the tracks.

And when someone asked it what it thought of all the people who had tried to erase those neighborhoods, those languages, those stories, those names — the raven opened its dark beak and said the only word it knew.

Nevermore.
