Systematically, deliberately, across centuries and continents and classrooms — the history books that started the story after the conquest, as if nothing existed before the arrival of the ships. The maps that renamed every mountain and river and sacred site, as if the names that had been spoken on this land for thousands of years had never existed. The curriculum that taught our children about everyone else’s history and called it universal, while our own history was called ethnic, optional, supplemental — something you could take as an elective if there was room in the schedule.

They wrote us out of the timeline.

And we showed up to every chapter anyway.

The Chicano who was told their culture was not history and made it history. The indigenous person who was told their language was dead and kept speaking it. The mestizo who was told they were neither one thing nor the other and became both, fully, unapologetically, in a way that required an entirely new category because the existing ones were not built to contain them. The abuela who kept the ceremony alive in the kitchen when it could not be kept alive in the temple. The abuelo who told the stories that were not in any book because he was the book. The generation that was told to assimilate and instead created an entire culture — the art, the music, the fashion, the language, the particular defiance of the Chicano who takes everything that was used to diminish them and turns it into something beautiful.

• Do NOT bleach — bleach is for erasure; this shirt is about the rewrite
• Tumble dry low — low heat preserves the DTF print; the declaration survives the dryer when you treat it right
